The Journey of a Decade
Founded in 2003 by Prof. Ashok Pandey, over the last ten years, we have grown with over 3700 Individual Members which includes over 1600 Life Members. This fast growing membership is also augmented by strong ties we have with our Affiliates and various international organization with who we maintain bilateral MoUs.
The genesis of creating a new professional society was long felt by academics and researchers in India as a need of the hour. This was guided by a large number of factors; the largest one being the absence of a professional society dedicated exclusively to biotechnology at national level in India. Other equally important factors included the absence of a platform, which could provide recognition to the meritorious scientific research carried out by the biotechnologists in India and to reward them by recognizing their contributions.
The founding of BRSI was a response to this and to provide a unifying platform for scientific advancement and collaboration.

BRSI is managed at two levels - the supreme body, known as Board of Governors (previously known as Board of Trustees) of the BRSI and a second layer of governance through the Management Council. Elections are held to appoint members to these two councils for a tenure of two years.

Individual and Institutional Membership
Regular Member
Any persons possessing Master’s degree in Science in Biological, or Life Sciences, or Bachelor’s degree in Engineering in Biotechnology or Biochemical Engineering can apply for the membership of the Society. Those working in the area of biotech research and business, but not possessing the aforesaid qualifications can also apply for the membership.
BRSI also considers accepting membership from the persons possessing Master’s degree in Social Sciences and Humanities, if such person works on the social issues related with the biotech education, research and business.
Fees: Rs. 1200 per year (April 1st to March 31st)
Life Member
Any person with above qualification can opt for the Life membership of the Society. Life membership is valid till the age of 75 years.
Fees: Rs. 5000 as one-time payment
Student Member
Any student perusing studies for MSc, MPhil, BTech, MTech, PhD degree in Biological/Life Sciences/Engineering can apply for the membership of the Society. In specific cases, students doing BSc Biotechnology can also be considered for the membership. A certificate of the studentship status of current date from the Head of the Department/Institute must be submitted by the applicant along with the application for the student membership.
Fees: Rs. 600 per year (April 1st to March 31st)
Institutional Member
BRSI also enrolls the academic institutes and industries as an institutional member. The tenure for institutional membership is 10 years.
Fees (For academic institutions / NGO / non-profit organizations): Rs. 20,000
Fees (For industries): Rs 50,000
